Throwing Off Mantles!

Hello dear friend,

My pastor shared a message from the story of blind Bartimaeus found in the gospel of Mark. He talked about the mantle the beggar wore to give him the legal right to actually beg along the dusty streets around Jericho. However, once Jesus called to him, Bartimaeus threw the beggar’s mantle off, and he received his sight.

While I’ve heard this story, and even read it, numerous times, I was struck by the phrase the beggar threw the mantle off. I began to ponder this action regarding mantles. In biblical times, mantles not only gave a person authority, they also gave legitimacy and identity. Imagine Elijah or Elisha walking around without theirs. We simply can’t. The significance of mantles cannot be minimized.

In the story of Bartimaeus, once he knew Jesus had called to him, he threw his beggar’s mantle off, ready to assume a new identity. And this is where the Lord dropped a revelation in my spirit—we all carry mantles we need to throw off. Perhaps it’s depression or poverty or guilt or shame. These ungodly, unholy mantles have given the enemy of our souls authority and the legal right to determine our legitimacy and identity. But the truth is that our identity and our legitimacy are both found in Jesus Christ. We are His. We are in Him. We are adopted into the Beloved. Our entire beings are rooted and grounded in Christ and what He did on the cross.

So I want to encourage all of us this week to throw off any mantle from the enemy and embrace the new identity Jesus bought and paid for with his blood. New creatures, the old has passed away, behold all things are new!
