Monday's Message of Hope

Do I Want to Hear God's Voice?

Hello dear friend,

My pastor just finished a series of messages on the book of Jonah. He posed some questions, as pastors are inclined to do, for his congregation to ponder. I want to share one with you, and then, expound a bit on it.

Do I want to hear God’s voice?

The obvious answer? Of course! Who doesn’t want to hear the voice of God? I know believers and even unbelievers who long to hear him speak to them, giving them hope or direction or peace. I certainly want to hear from him . . . except when he tells me something I don’t want to hear.

And that, my friend, has happened to me more times than I can probably remember. Here are a few examples from my own life:

  • He told me to resign from a teacher’s organization. I didn’t want to.
  • He told me to stay in a job with an abusive employer. I didn’t want to.
  • He told me stay with my husband. I didn’t want to.
  • He told me to stay in a church. I didn’t want to.
  • He told me to wait when I wanted to find a job. I didn’t want to.
  • He told me to forgive certain individuals. I didn’t want to.
  • He told me to love the unlovely. I didn’t want to.

Yet, even though doing what he asked me to do was hard—at times heartbreakingly hard—I obeyed. Sometimes with tears, sometimes with frustration, sometimes with a little rebellion. Why? Because I know that I know that I know ten million times that God loves me with an everlasting love and he knows what is best for me. He’s the one who knit me together in my mother’s womb. He’s the one who deposited gifts and callings into me before I was born. He’s the one who has already fashioned all of my days for me.

So even when I think I know better, his plans, purposes, and desires for me will always be for me to have the abundant life Jesus came to give me. Consequently, I will always have a yearning deep inside to hear his voice, even when he tells me something that I may not want to hear or that will move me out of my comfort zone or that will cause me to stretch in ways I didn’t think possible.

I’d like to think I’m not alone in answering this question with except when God tells me . . . This week I’m going to listen for God’s voice and obey because my Father knows best. I hope you feel the same way.
