Monday's Message of Hope

God's Expectations!

Hello, dear friend

My sincere apologies for missing the last two weeks. I contracted covid for the second time, and that nasty piece of work did a number on my physical body, especially my energy level. I simply didn’t have the strength or the stamina to do much of anything.

While I had to miss all of the Easter/Resurrection celebrations, I hope you all rejoiced in the resurrection of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, the hope of the world!

For the next few weeks, I’d like to focus on a couple of verses that dovetail with each other, one in Micah and the other in James. They encourage us to move forward in our walk with the Lord:

He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you
But to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?  (Micah 6:8, NKJV)

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27, NJKV)

Both of these verses lay out clear expectations for us:

  • Do justly: God is a just and righteous God, and he expects his family to walk in justice and righteousness.
  • Love mercy: God is a merciful God, and he expects his family to show mercy.
  • Walk humbly: God’s Son, Jesus, humbled himself as a man and allowed himself to be crucified. He expects his family to walk in humility before others.
  • Visit widows and orphans in their trouble: God cares deeply for widows and orphans, and he expects his family to do the same.
  • Stay unspotted from the world: God is pure and holy, and he expects his family to walk in purity and holiness.

Now that all important question: Why would God expect us to follow these directives? Especially when he knows how often we fail to obey sometimes the even smallest nudge from him?

Because Jesus, through Holy Spirit, lives on the inside of us. We really can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. (see Phil 4:13) We can do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before him. We can visit widows and orphans in their troubles. We can stay unspotted from the world. Because HE LIVES!

That’s the real message of the cross, of the resurrection. Jesus lives. Now. Today. What better way to honor his sacrifice than to align ourselves with his expectations and watch God move and change lives. What a way to live! Let’s come together and do just that.
