Monday's Message of Hope

Living Sacrifices!

Hello, dear friend

Our path of living and walking in the Spirit continues in Romans this week. Let’s look at a very familiar set of verses:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is you reasonable service And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:1–2, NKJV)

Whether Jew or Gentile, all of those gathered at the church in Rome understood the role of sacrifices. But rather than offering a dead animal on an altar, Paul exhorted the believers to become living sacrifices unto God. A completely new concept, the apostle spent the rest of the letter teaching them the practical aspects of what it means to be a living sacrifice surrounded by pagan gods.

While some nations or cultures have temple shrines for other gods, here in America we don’t. However, we still fall into the trap of offering sacrifices of time, affection, and money to idols—sports, music, movies, politics, glamour, etc. Ouch!!!

Now, more than ever, God is calling each of us to a more intimate relationship with our Bridegroom. And that starts with becoming a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to the Lord. What does that look like? What does it mean? We’ll take the next few weeks to delve into those questions, but this week I choose to be a living sacrifice. Will you join me?

  • Do you sense the conviction of Holy Spirit regarding any idols?
  • Where have you sacrificed your time, affection, and money?
  • How will this impact your prayer life?

Yes, people can also be an idol, as I have learned. Perhaps, pleasing a mate, a close friend, or someone you have read about that has a word for you. These influences can sway our outlook, unless we measure it against the Word or test the spirit of their words without going to ask Holy Spirit.

I don't sense the Holy Spirit in regard to idols, but do feel His direction as to where, when and how much I should move and why it is important to those I love, as well as myself. Please guide me, Holy Spirit, every day, in every way!
